Costa Rica Challenge 18 days – from $755 pp
Riding the beach on a horseback or in a buggy, if you love to be active on the water this is the trip for you with kayaking, rafting, surfing, windsurfing and swimming. Swinging from tree to tree in the canopy, canyoning, biking, in short: this package is loaded with activities in Costa Rica’s impressive natural environment!
Day 1 – Dos Palmas Country Inn in La Garita
After your arrival at the international airport of Juan Santamaría in Alajuela, close to Costa Rica’s capital San José, we will pick you up and transfer you to hotel Dos Palmas. It’s only a 15 minute drive and you will have time to relax and adjust to the tropical climate. Your rental car will be waiting for you at the hotel.
Day 2 and 3 - Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge in San Gerardo de Dota
Dantica Lodge is located in the cloud forests of San Gerardo de Dota where you can spot the famous but elusive quetzal, if you’re lucky. You can visit the natural parks Los Quetzales and Tapanti or go for a walk (with or without a guide) through the private natural reserve of Dantica which covers 9 hectares.
Day 4 and 5 Casa Botania in San Vito
A relaxed setting in the middle of a natural hotspring area. You can visit the biggest botanical garden of Central America ‘Wilson Botanical Gardens’ with the owner of Casa Botania, Pepe, as a guide. He is a birder and knows all about the local bird population. At the end of the day you can enjoy a meal in the Costa Rican-Belgium restaurant of Casa Botania, which is located in the deep south of Costa Rica, close to the Panama border.
Day 6 and 7 Rancho Burica in Punta Banco
Rancho Burica, surrounded by lush tropical garden, invites you to enjoy this surfers paradise. If you enjoy peace and quiet, beach and ocean, you will feel right at home here. Dinner in the evening at one big round cozy table, shared with the other guests. Unforgettable sunsets are waiting for you!
Day 8 and 9 El Mono Feliz in Ojochal
In the green South of Costa Rica you will find the cozy cabins of El Mono Feliz (the happy monkey). There are many (day-) trips available in this area: boating tour through the biggest mangrove forest in Central America, diving with the dolphins or spotting whales. It’s also possible to book a tour to Caño island where you can snorkel in pristine waters. Or how about a visit to an indigenous village, horseback riding on the unspoiled and quiet beaches or dinner at one of the restaurants of Ojochal?
Day 10 and 11 Monte Terras in Tronadora
Monte Terras is located at Lake Arenal in the northern province of Guanacaste where you will stay in a colorful and comfortable cabin. You can see the Arenal volcano from Monte Terras and in the evening you can see the lava rolling down the mountain – if you’re lucky. Of course you can hike the volcano, walk the lava rocks from the 1992 eruption or go horseback riding. A visit to the Monteverde cloud forest with its suspended bridges, canopy tours and numerous trails is a must. You can enjoy windsurfing and kayaking or take a boat tour at lake Arenal.
Day 12 and 13 Aroma de Campo in Curubandé
In the north of Costa Rica, close to Nicaragua, you can find hotel Aroma de Campo where you will stay in one of the colorful rooms. The main attraction to visit from this location is the national park of Rincón de la Vieja. It has a choice of trails, taking you to waterfalls and bubbling mud pools where you can smell the sulfur. The most spectacular trail will take you to the main crater, but it’s about 7 hrs walking. In the park you will find many species of trees, orchids and other plants, while the monkeys are keeping you company in the canopy.
Day 14 , 15 and 16 at the Nicoya Peninsula. You can determine yourself where to spend these six days – Fidelito Ranch or Hotel Celaje
Fidelito Holiday Ranch in Tambor: This hacienda style hotel on the Nicoya Peninsula is located in the jungle covered mountains of Tambor. A guided tour around the hotels 60 hectares of jungle is included. Other activities are: horseback riding, biking, hiking, walking or just relaxing at the 7 kms long beach.
Beach Hotel Celaje in Cabuya: At the southern tip of Nicoya Peninsula you will find Beach Hotel Celaje, where you can relax for a couple of days at the beach. You can take several day trips, i.e. to an uninhabited island. The hotel is located directly at the beach with a great view of the Pacific Ocean. A comfortable little bungalow will be your starting point.
Day 17 – Dos Palmas Country Inn La Garita
The last night you will spend at Dos Palmas again. On the porch, enjoying a cool drink at the swimming pool, you can look back on a wonderful vacation. You will also return you rental car here.
Day 18 Departure from San José, we will take you to the airport.
Of course each hotel has a number of (day-) trips for you. We have only made a small selection in the above hotel descriptions. Pricing is based on two persons traveling together.
