Volcano & Beach - 21 days
Smoking volcanoes, lava flows, bubbling mud pools smelling of sulfur: you can see it all in Costa Rica. There are many volcanoes in Costa Rica, the most famous ones being Arenal, Rincón de la Vieja, Turrialba, Poás and Irazú. This trip will take you to four volcanoes in combination with a number of relaxing days at the sea shore and the jungle. Every day will bring you new surprises!
Day 1 and 2 Dos Palmas Country Inn in La Garita or Hotel Bougainvillea in Heredia
Dos Palmas Country Inn in La Garita - After your arrival at the international airport of Juan Santamaría in Alajuela, close to Costa Rica’s capital San José, we will pick you up and transfer you to hotel Dos Palmas. It’s only a 15 minute drive and you will have time to relax and adjust to the tropical climate. Your rental car will be waiting for you at the hotel. You can visit the volcano Poás from this location.
Hotel Bougainvillea in Heredia - After your arrival at the international airport of Juan Santamaría in Alajuela, close to Costa Rica’s capital San José, we will pick you up and transfer you to hotel Bougainvillea. It's only a 20 minute drive and you will have time to relax and adjust to the tropical climate. Your rental car will be waiting for you at the hotel. This hotel has gorgeous tropical gardens and is a great starting point to discover San Jose.
Day 3, 4 and 5 Guayabo “Smokey Volcano”Lodge in Turrialba
Today you are driving to the Turrialba area. Mountains and unspoiled natural forests surround the spectacular Guayabo Lodge. Here you can enjoy walking, in example to the Turrialba volcano. Visit one of the botanical gardens and check out the Guayabo Monument. At Ortuño farm they will show you how coffee, sugarcane and macadamia nuts are traditionally processed and produced. Don’t miss the daily fruit market of Cartago!
Day 6 and 7 Heliconia Island in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí
Heliconia Island. The name says it all: it’s located on a small island between two rivers. The lush tropical gardens surrounding the hotel are famous for their beauty. You can spot many birds and also monkeys. A visit to a pineapple and a banana plantation, a boat trip on the river or a visit to the biological center Selva Verde are amongst your options.
Day 8, 9 and 10 – Monte Terras in Tronadora
Monte Terras is located at Lake Arenal in the northern province of Guanacaste where you will stay in a colorful and comfortable cabina. You can see the Arenal volcano from Monte Terras and in the evening you can see the lava rolling down the mountain – if you’re lucky. Of course you can hike the volcano, walk the lava rocks from the 1992 eruption or go horseback riding. A visit to the Monteverde cloud forest with its suspended bridges, canopy tours and numerous trails is a must. You can enjoy windsurfing and kayaking or take a boat tour at lake Arenal.
Day 11, 12 and 13 - Aroma de Campo in Curubandé
In the north of Costa Rica, close to Nicaragua, you can find hotel Aroma de Campo where you will stay in one of the colorful rooms. The main attraction to visit from this location is the national park of Rincón de la Vieja. It has a choice of trails, taking you to waterfalls and bubbling mud pools where you can smell the sulfur. The most spectacular trail will take you to the main crater, but it’s about 7 hrs walking. In the park you will find many species of trees, orchids and other plants, while the monkeys are keeping you company in the canopy.
Day 14 to 19 at the Pacific Coast. You can determine yourself where to spend these five days – Beach hotel Celaje, Fidelito Ranch, Mar de Luz, Playa Bejuco, El Mono Feliz, and Rancho Burica or any combination of these hotels (please consult us, the distances and driving times are quit long).
Fidelito Holiday Ranch in Tambor: This hacienda style hotel on the Nicoya Peninsula is located in the jungle covered mountains of Tambor. A guided tour around the hotels 60 hectares of jungle is included. Other activities are: horseback riding, biking, hiking, walking or just relaxing at the 7 kms long beach.
Beach Hotel Celaje in Cabuya: At the southern tip of Nicoya Peninsula you will find Beach Hotel Celaje, where you can relax for a couple of days at the beach. You can take several day trips, i.e. to an uninhabited island. The hotel is located directly at the beach with a great view of the Pacific Ocean. A comfortable little bungalow will be your starting point.
Mar de Luz is located in the bustling town of Jacó. It’s a cosy family hotel with great facilities. If you’re in for a more luxury stay, the hotel Playa Bejuco.is a good choice. Walking distance to the beach and in a tranquil setting, it is located at a 25 minute drive from Jacó.
Relax at the beach or go surfing. A visit to Manuel Antonio Park and a boat tour on a crocodile river are examples of the tours available to you. Parrots can be found in the woods of Carara park. Hotel Playa Bejuco is located at Walking distance to the beach in a tranquil setting. It’s about 25 minutes by car from Jacó.
In the green South of Costa Rica you will find the cozy cabins of El Mono Feliz (the happy monkey). There are many (day-) trips available in this area: boating tour through the biggest mangrove forest in Central America, diving with the dolphins or spotting whales. It’s also possible to book a tour to Caño island where you can snorkel in pristine waters. Or how about a visit to an indigenous village, horseback riding on the unspoiled and quiet beaches or dinner at one of the restaurants of Ojochal?
Rancho Burica, surrounded by lush tropical garden, invites you to enjoy this surfers paradise. If you enjoy peace and quiet, beach and ocean, you will feel right at home here. Dinner in the evening at one big round cozy table, shared with the other guests. Unforgettable sunsets are waiting for you!
Day 20 Dos Palmas Country Inn in La Garita or Hotel Bougainvillea in Heredia (your choice)
The last night you will spend at Dos Palmas or Bougainvillea again. On the porch, enjoying a cool drink at the swimming pool, you can look back on a wonderful vacation. You will also return you rental car here.
Departure from San José, we will take you to the airport.
